In fact I use layer-by-layer method for all higher dimensions puzzle. The key concept is to solve the "last layer" of the puzzle, which requires an algorithm. This algorithm only changes the top layer in the same way as its lower dimension version (I.e. For MC4D, the lower version is MC3D). My method includes 4 steps:

1’ First 2 layer (for lager size, first m-1 layer)

2’ Orientation of last layer.

3’ permutation of the "center" of last layer, which are 2-color blocks.

4’ solve the rest just like an n-1 dimension cube.

> As you can see, none of the algorithms are particularly long or unwieldy, and those that are long as simply conjugates created from another algorithm. The method itself is also not terribly difficult to use once you learn it. I’m not really one to judge though, seeing as I haven’t used any other method yet. :P Here’s an album of images I created showing how to use the macros, and here’s a pastebin of the macros file. I hope to upload tutorials and/or example solves using this method to Youtube at some point in the next week, but no promises there. Let me know if any of you have any success with this, and how it compares to Roice’s solution in both ease of learning, ease of use, move count, and speed.
